The Concept of Culture

Culture refers to the patterns of behavior and belief common to members of a society.

Rules for understanding and generating customary behavior.

Includes beliefs, norms, value, assumptions, expectations, and plans for action.

Framework within which people see the world around them, interpret events and behavior, and react to their perceived reality.

Culture is learned

Culture is shared

Culture is an adaptation (cultures do not arise fortuitously)

Every culture is a dynamic system

American culture fits a familiar pattern.  Americans have rules for understanding and generating behavior which are learned and shared.
